Alex Ward, PhD, MRPharmS, is a Senior Epidemiologist and Research Scientist with UBC’s Center for Epidemiology and Database Analytics (CEDA). In her current position, she acts as principal investigator on a variety of pharmacoepidemiology studies and on multidisciplinary research teams to complete epidemiology, risk assessment and modeling projects in collaboration with experts in these areas. The projects include individual patient database studies, systematic literature reviews and meta-analysis to support pharmaceutical companies with their epidemiology, health economic modeling and risk assessment projects. Since joining UBC she has participated in safety-related studies that encompass a broad spectrum of projects providing support for new drug applications, periodic safety update reports, and post-marketing surveillance activities.

For the past 10 years, she has specialized in pharmacoepidemiology, and pharmacoeconomics research. She has designed and managed a wide range of research projects that have included literature reviews, retrospective cohort studies, data analysis (costs, resource use, adverse events, and outcomes), international surveys, meta-analyses, designing burden of illness, and cost-effectiveness models. She has published and presented extensively and has been an author of 37 publications in refereed journals. Prior to joining UBC, Dr. Ward was employed by Caro Research, which was acquired by UBC in 2007. Dr. Ward’s experience also includes practicing as a clinical pharmacist in the UK National Health System for 5 years, and working in regulatory affairs for 9 years with Glaxo.

Dr. Ward earned her bachelor of pharmacy degree (1st Class Honors) from Bath University, and remains a registered pharmacist in the United Kingdom (Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain). She completed her master of science degree in clinical pharmacy at the London School of Pharmacy, and holds a diploma in regulatory affairs from the British Institute of Regulatory Affairs and Cardiff University. She received a PhD from the School of Pharmacy, University of Rhode Island. She is currently adjunct faculty at the University of Rhode Island, School of Pharmacy.
