Stuart A Montgomery, MD, was Professor of Psychiatry at Imperial College, University of London until his retirement in 1996 when he became Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry. He has great breadth of experience in the field of psychotropic medicine with seminal work in depression, anxiety disorders, suicide prevention and schizophrenia.
His reputation was established early with his work on improving the methodology of clinical trials. His numerous placebo-controlled studies in the long-term treatment of depression and anxiety have set the standard for investigations in the field. The Montgomery & Asberg Depression Rating Scale is now recognized as the most sensitive measure of efficacy.
He has published 26 books and more than 400 papers. Dr. Montgomery is editor of International Clinical Psychopharmacology and was editor of European Neuropsychopharmacology for 20 years. He also serves on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals.
Professor Montgomery completed his undergraduate training in Medicine at University College, University of London. He carried out research with the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, where he was awarded a research postgraduate MD.
