European Director
Center for Epidemiology and Database Analytics (CEDA)
Andrew Maguire, BSc (HONS), MSc, is UBC’s European Director of the Center for Epidemiology and Database Analytics (CEDA) based in the London office. In this position he will oversee and lead epidemiology, database, and safety-related projects in Europe, including individual patient database analyses, prospective epidemiology and drug safety studies, and systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses.
His last post was as the Medical Research Manager at CSD-EPIC in London, a company dedicated to the use of longitudinal UK patient data for pharmacoepidemiological and drug safety studies. As head of the UK Medical Research group, he was also responsible for epidemiological studies using primary care data from several European countries and coordinated and published work quantifying data quality over time that led to a tool for researchers.
He has 20 years experience in epidemiology in which time he has held several posts in local government and university-based research organizations in Spain, principally in the areas of AIDS and Cancer research. In 2000, Mr. Maguire moved to the area of pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety and worked for major pharmaceutical companies. One of his key focus areas was the methodological development for the population risk-benefit of therapies, and specifically Cox-2 vs. NSAIDs which was used by European and US regulatory authorities after the withdrawal of a popular NSAID due to evidence of harm.
Mr. Maguire received his BSc (Hons) degree in applied science from the University of Kingston (London), and later an MSc degree in medical statistics (University of London). He is currently developing new methods to quantify the expected population impact of drug risk-benefit and risk minimization interventions. This is being done as a PhD project at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London).
