Ethan Leder and Mark Clein launched United BioSource Corporation in 2003 as a new kind of pharmaceutical services organization focused on generating and analyzing real-world data. With over 1,200 talented staff, UBC now has offices in 20 locations around the globe.

April 2008 UBC acquires Envision Pharma, a leading scientific communications and technology company. Envision integrates scientific communication services and targeted software applications that contribute to marketplace awareness and comprehension of compounds at launch and beyond.

March 2008 UBC forms a European advisory board for data quality – comprised of six leading experts in CNS, psychiatry and neurology – to offer clients cutting-edge thinking in study methodology for CNS clinical trials. The board will be led by Oto Markovic, MD, Regional Manager of UBC’s European Regional Headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic.

February 2008 UBC expands its regulatory affairs group, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, led by Mark Ammann, PharmD.

September 2007 UBC acquires Caro Research, Inc., a Boston-based leading provider of simulation technologies with offices in Canada that helps pharmaceutical and life science companies assess costs and benefits associated with health care.

August 2007 UBC acquires the Institute for Medical Education and Research (IMER), a market leader in continuing medical education (CME)/continuing education (CE) for physicians, nurses and other health professionals specializing in oncology. UBC also establishes an office in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Capabilities include data management, biostatistics, medical writing and regulatory consulting.

July 2007 UBC acquires an ownership interest in ClinResearch GmbH, a Cologne, Germany-based global leader in technology solutions and services for flexible, or adaptive, clinical trials, with offices in Kiev and Moscow.

March 2007 United BioSource and Goldman Sachs host an expert panel to discuss innovation in pharmaceutical clinical trial design.

2006 To round out its services to the life sciences industry, UBC gains staff with expertise in data management, programming, biostatistics and medical writing services for pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients. In addition, they bring in a leading provider of systematic reviews and meta-analyses to inform the development, marketing and regulatory decision-making that surround health care products and services.

2005 UBC continues its growth, adding business development services, as well as:
  • Interactive voice response (IVR) and web systems for clinical research
  • Expanded information systems and telecommunications services (including call center services)
  • Additional late-stage clinical development expertise for pharmaceutical companies, with specialized knowledge of post-marketing studies, product life-cycle management, risk management and patient registries
  • A drug safety and risk management consulting practice led by Gerald Faich, MD, MPH, the former Director of the Office of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Annette Stemhagen, DrPH, FISPE
  • New UBC offices are established in Ambler, Pa.; Blue Bell, Pa.; and San Francisco, Calif.
2004 UBC adds expertise in these areas:
  • Training and education services for clinical investigators, study site personnel and patients
  • Reimbursement planning for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device and diagnostics industries
  • Late-stage clinical development services for pharmaceutical companies
  • Information systems and telecommunications services for post-marketing surveillance, pharmacovigilance and risk management of pharmaceutical products
  • Outcomes research, health economics studies and other scientific services for the pharmaceutical and life sciences industries

With this expansion, UBC adds offices throughout the United States – in Wayne, Pa.; Arlington, Va.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Morgantown, W.Va. – as well as in Brussels, London and Prague.

2003 Ethan Leder and Mark Clein form United BioSource Corporation. Within eight months, they raised $153 million to acquire and build the capabilities to bring their vision of a new kind of pharmaceutical services organization to life.
